Peter Kiss Wins MAAC Rookie of the Week Award

HAMDEN, Conn. - Freshman guard Peter Kiss (New York, N.Y./Notre Dame (Mass.) Prep) was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week after a breakthrough performance at the AdvoCare Invitational in Orlando, it was announced today by the league office.
Kiss came into the AdvoCare Invitational averaging 7.0 points through his first two contests, but exploded to average 16.0 points over the three-game tournament. He opened play in Orlando with a game-high 18 points against No. 11 Gonzaga, shooting 8-13 from the floor and helping the Bobcats give their nationally ranked foes a battle before falling 82-62. Kiss hit a three-pointer early in the second half to get the Bobcats as close as five points, before Gonzaga finally pulled away.
A day later, Kiss one-upped his own performance with 19 points in a close battle with Seton Hall. He shot 7-11 from the floor in that contest and 4-4 from three, tying for the fifth-best single-game three-point shooting performance in Quinnipiac's Division I history (current teammate Daniel Harris is tied for second with a 5-5 last year at Manhattan). Kiss was perfect in the second half (5-5 from the floor) for 13 points, including a three-pointer that finished a 13-0 run to cut a 15-point Seton Hall lead down to two with just under 10 minutes left, before the Pirates held off the challenge and earned a tough 90-79 win.
Kiss finished off his weekend with 11 points in an 80-77 win over Indiana State, reaching double figures for the third time in three tournament games. He ended the AdvoCare Invitational averaging 16.0 points on 51.4 percent shooting from the floor and 60.0 percent from three-point territory.
Kiss becomes the third active Quinnipiac player with a MAAC Rookie of the Week Award to his credit. A year ago, current sophomore Abdulai Bundu (Upper Marlboro, Md.) earned it after a 23-point, 15-rebound effort against Maine, while current sophomore Andrew Robinson (Takoma Park, Md.) earned it after scoring 15 points in one half on five three-pointers in a win over Marist.
