
QU Women's Tennis Earns First Dual Win of Season over Sacred Heart

Freshman Layla Rodriguez (Rancho Santa Margarita, California) earned a singles and doubles win on the day, giving her 18 total wins on the season, which ties her for the overall team lead with Rachel Horton (Stamford, Connecticut).
The Bobcats (1-1, 0-0 MAAC) swept all three doubles matches against the Pioneers (0-1, 0-0 NEC) to take the doubles point and jump out to a 1-0 lead. Sydney Young (Austin, Texas) and Horton got the day started for the Bobcats in doubles play when they took on Taylor Gurda and Sabrina Navarro. Horton and Young showed how great their chemistry was, as they coasted to a 6-2 victory, improving their doubles record to 11-3 this season. Sitilia Rencheli (Sarasota, Florida) and Rodriguez followed up with a win of their own, defeating Brianne Lauria and Olivia Podsiebierski 6-3.
Quinnipiac was able to close out Sacred Heart in doubles play when Jennifer Lu (Cypress, California) and Kelsi Oliphant (Calgary, Alberta) took on Adrianne Alfonso and Claudia Ruiz. Lu and Oliphant were able to coast to a 6-0 victory, giving the Bobcats a 1-0 lead going into singles play.
The Bobcats earned their first singles win of the day in the No. 4 singles match, where Rodriguez was able to earn her 18th victory of the season when she defeated Navarro 6-1 and 6-0 in straight sets. Rodriguez's 18 wins ties her for the team lead with Horton.
Rencheli followed when she took on Gurda in the No. 2 singles match, where Rencheli defeated her 6-1 in straight sets. Alexandra Mircea (Glen Rock, New Jersey) followed with a win of her own when she defeated Ruiz 6-0 and 6-2 in straight sets, giving the Bobcats a 4-0 lead over the Pioneers.
Young kept the Bobcats' winning-streak going when defeated Alfonso 6-3 and 6-4 in straight sets. Lu followed in the No. 3 singles match, where she aimed to get the winning-streak to six when she took on Lauria. Lauria took the first set 6-2, but Lu bounced back and took the final two sets 6-4 and 10-4, giving Quinnipiac a 6-0 lead over Sacred Heart.
The Pioneers were able to put a score on the board when Podsiebierski defeated Horton in the No. 1 singles match. Horton took the first set 6-2, but Podsiebierski was able to battle back and take the second set 7-6, then the final set 10-7, but Quinnipiac took the team victory 6-1.
The Quinnipiac women's tennis team returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 12 P.M. when the team hosts the Rider Broncs for its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match of the season.
