Quinnipiac to Appear on ESPNU at Home for the Second Time in Program History
HAMDEN, Connecticut – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference released the 2016-17 women's basketball schedule on Tuesday, October 11, 2016. The reigning MAAC Regular Season Champion Quinnipiac Bobcats have four nationally-televised conference games on ESPN networks in the upcoming slate, including a premier Friday, February 17 matchup against 2016 MAAC Champion Iona at the TD Bank Sports Center set to broadcast on ESPNU.
Of the 24 MAAC women's games on ESPN networks in 2016-17, Quinnipiac tied with Iona for the most appearances with four. Of the 24 MAAC women's basketball ESPN telecasts this season, the lone regular season ESPNU broadcast will feature the Bobcats as the home matchup against Iona receives the largest national spotlight of the 2016-17 regular season slate. The game also signals the second time Quinnipiac women's basketball will have a home game played on ESPNU. The first time came back in the 2013 Northeast Conference Championship game which ended in a dominant 72-33 victory for Quinnipiac.
The spotlight ESPNU game falls on Feb. 17 as the Bobcats welcome the Iona Gaels to the TD Bank Sports Center with tipoff set for 5 PM. Quinnipiac's second contest against the Gaels in 2016-17 will get the national spotlight as the Bobcats are guaranteed at least one game on ESPNU for the fourth straight season. This also marks just the third time (first at home) that a Bobcat regular season game will be aired on ESPNU (Feb. 14, 2014 @ Marist, Feb. 5, 2015 @ Siena). Iona is coming off their first MAAC Championship in program history as the Gaels went 23-12 last season, earning the No. 2 seed in the MAAC Tournament and defeating the Bobcats, 57-41, in the title game.
The nationally televised schedule begins with an in-state ESPN3 showdown on Thursday, Feb. 2 at 5 PM from the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport as the Bobcats will take on the Fairfield Stags. The second meeting against the Stags of the 2016-17 season kicks off the televised slate of MAAC games. Fairfield earned the fourth seed in the 2016 MAAC Tournament and fell in the quarterfinal round to Monmouth. A talented senior-laden squad, Fairfield was chosen as the favorites to win the conference in the preseason coaches' poll last season but suffered through a disappointing 16-15 campaign in 2015-16.
Two ESPN3 games pitting the Bobcats against the Marist Red Foxes fill the 2016-17 broadcast slate as both contests between these two MAAC powers will appear on the ESPN network. These two MAAC powers will meet for the seventh and eighth time on an ESPN network out of 10 meetings since Quinnipiac joined the league at the start of the 2013-14 season. The first meeting between both sides in 2016-17 comes on Thursday, Feb. 9 at 5 PM from Hamden while the second contest from Poughkeepsie is scheduled two weeks later on Thursday, Feb. 23 at 5:30 PM. Marist has gone without a MAAC title for back-to-back seasons after rolling through the MAAC with nine consecutive championships from 2006-2014. A traditional power in the conference, questions surround the Red Foxes' 2016-17 squad as two All-MAAC First Team selections – Sydney Coffey and Tori Jarosz (2016 MAAC Player of the Year) – graduated last season.
The MAAC Women's Championship will be televised on ESPNU on Monday, March 6 at 5 PM while the two semifinal matchups are slated for ESPN3 on Sunday, March 5 at 11 AM and 1:30 PM.
