LOUDONVILLE, NY – Freshman outside hitter Jen Coffey (Merrimack, New Hampshire) of the Quinnipiac University women's volleyball team was named to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference All-Rookie Team in a vote of the league's head coaches, announced this evening at the MAAC's annual awards banquet. In addition to the athletic awards, six Bobcats were recognized for their academic achievements.
Coffey ranked third on the team with 176 kills in just 18 matches while leading the Bobcats with 2.92 kills per set. The freshman recorded double-digit kills in 10 contests this season including six in a span of eight matches. Against UMass Lowell, Coffey slammed a career-high 18 kills, adding five digs to lead Quinnipiac. The outside hitter posted arguably her best match of the season in the Bobcats' 2015 finale at home against Manhattan on November 15. Coffey smashed 14 kills, needing just 18 swings in the three sets. Her .722 hitting percentage marked a career-high for the freshman.
In addition to the All-Rookie honor for Coffey, six student-athletes were named to the MAAC All-Academic team. The Bobcats tied Manhattan and Marist with the most players to earn academic laurels. Sophomore Elizabeth Kloos (Munster, Indiana), juniors Allison Leigh (Palmer, Alaska), Cody Michaels (Versailles, Kentucky), Jamie Paolucci (Lake Mary, Florida), Katie Urycki (Chesterton, Indiana) and senior Chandler Thornton (Arlington, Texas) were all recognized for their standout performances in the classroom. Thornton was named to the team each of the three years Quinnipiac has been a member of the MAAC.
Canisius, Fairfield and Siena all placed two players on the All-MAAC First Team, while the Saints dominated the major awards. Briana Flagg of Siena took home the night's biggest award, earning Player of the Year honors while teammate Haley Howell was named Setter of the Year. For the rest of the major awards, Niagara's Rylee Hunt earned recognition as the Libero of the Year and Hailey Riede of Rider was tabbed Rookie of the Year. In his fifth season at the helm of the Stags, Fairfield's Todd Kress was named MAAC Coach of the Year.
The Bobcats concluded their regular season last weekend with two home losses to Iona and Manhattan. In the 2015 finale, Quinnipiac fell to the Jaspers by just two points in the first two sets before Manhattan pulled away in the final frame.
