HAMDEN, Connecticut – The Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team leapfrogged North Dakota and Bemidji State to move up three spots to No. 5 in the USCHO.com Division I Women's Poll, as released on Monday, Oct. 26.
With the leap in the polls from No. 8 to No. 5, the Bobcats received a season-high 71 points as they remained unbeaten through the first five games of the season for the third consecutive season.
As of the completion of all women's ice hockey games on Sunday, the Bobcats are also ranked fifth in the Pairwise Rankings, which is USCHO.com's ranking to replicate the method the NCAA Selection Committee uses to determine the NCAA Tournament participants.
The Bobcats rolled past the Yale Bulldogs, 6-3, on Saturday afternoon, posting the most goals in a single game this season and their most goals in a game since Feb. 27 against Princeton in the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals.
Senior forward Nicole Kosta posted her eighth career game of three or more points, as she scored two goals and assisted one more, to put her in second on the team with four goals and tied for third with five points. Not to be outdone, Melissa Samoskevich (Sandy Hook, Connecticut) recorded her second consecutive three point game with one goal and two assists, including the game-winner. Samoskevich currently leads the team with seven assists and is tied for the team lead with nine points, and is the first freshman to record a point in her first five games since Kelly Babstock in 2010-11.
Taylar Cianfarano (Oswego, New York) and Nicole Connery (Newmarket, Ontario) each recorded multi-point games for the Bobcats with one goal and one assist. Cianfarano has recorded a point in five consecutive games and a goal in four consecutive games on her way to a team-leading five goals and is tied for the team lead with nine points. Connery's multi-point effort put her at two goals and three assists for five points, tied for third on the team.
The top four spots in the USCHO.com poll remain unchanged with Minnesota taking all 15 first place votes once again, followed by Boston College, Wisconsin and Clarkson. The Bobcats and Harvard Crimson flipped spots at No. 5 and No. 8, while Bemidji State and North Dakota remain No. 6 and No. 7, respectively. Northeastern moved up one spot to No. 9 while Dartmouth cracked the top 10 for the first time this season after beating Harvard in the season-opener.
In total, eight of the 12 ECAC Hockey teams either were ranked in the poll or received votes, good for the most in any conference.
The Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team returns to action for their first conference weekend of the season as they travel to Providence, Rhode Island to face the Brown Bears on Friday, Oct. 30 at 7 P.M. before returning to New Haven, Connecticut to face the Yale Bulldogs on Saturday, Oct. 31 at 4 P.M.
