Hamden, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University women's rugby team advanced to the ACRA National Semifinals on Sunday afternoon with a 46-20 win over the Brown Bears. Freshman Rebecca Haight (Oconomowoc, Wisconsin) led QU with two tries for 10 points. The Bobcats will take on the number one seeded Penn. State Nittany Lions in Palm Coast, Florida for the semifinal on Saturday, Dec. 6 at the Indian Trails Sports Complex.
After defeating the Army Black Knights on Saturday, Quinnipiac was set to take on Brown for the first all-time meeting in the Regional Final at Vassar College. The Bears jumped out to an early 5-0 lead just minutes into the game with a try followed by a missed conversion attempt. The lead was short lived however as a beautiful ball out for Quinnipiac led to a Haight try. Graduate student Aine McKeever (Derry City, Ireland) converted the kick for a 7-5 lead.
The Bobcats led for the rest of the game and went up 14-5 after a ball out to Christie Albers (Castle Rock, Colorado) turned into the second QU try of the contest. McKeever converted her second attempt with eight minutes to play in the half. The Bears answered and closed out the half down by four, 14-10.
Senior Shannon Durkin (Oakland, California) continued her dominant scoring pace in the second half with her team leading 19th try of the season off a Megan Johnson (Olympia, Washington) assist. Brown scored their first try of the half shortly after the Durkin try, but were unable to connect on the conversion.
Leading by four, the Bobcats fired back with a steal and try from two-time All-American Natalie Kosko (Sebastian, Florida). Brown continued the game of catch up, scoring off a scrum at the five for a 24-20 score. The try was the last score of the day for the Bears, while Quinnipiac continued to add points to the scoreboard.
Senior Elisa Cuellar (Palm Bay, Florida) got in on the action with her second try of the postseason. McKeever followed the score with a successful conversion kick. The Bobcats scored the last points of the game with less than 10 minutes to go in the second half. Haight scored her second try of the game off an assist from Lindey Wise (Franklin, Wisconsin) to tally a final score of 46-20.
In the other quarterfinals game, the Nittany Lions took down Lindenwood University 88-0 at Notre Dame College. The Bobcats will play Penn. State in their first all-time matchup.
