Annapolis, Maryland – The Quinnipiac University women's rugby team moved to 4-3 with a 99-19 victory at Navy. After losing their last two road games, the Bobcats made a statement with their impressive win over the Midshipman. Senior Shannon Durkin (Oakland, California) led Quinnipiac with a school record seven tries. Sophomore Maggie Myles (Emmitsburg, Maryland) added a career high five tries of her own.
Durkin started the game off strong, scoring in the opening minutes after a steal at the ruck. Myles followed her teammates' score with her first try and Aine McKeever (Derry City, Ireland) converted her second kick to lead 14-0. Navy answered with their first score of the afternoon, but Quinnipiac scored the next 38 points of the game.
Myles quickly scored after the Midshipman try with her second try of the game of an assist from senior Jennifer Salomon (Garnerville, New York). Durkin then scored her second try followed by Megan Johnson's first score of the day to make the score 33-7. Johnson then found Raechel Stimson for the sixth try of the contest.
Five more points came from the QU side as freshman Rebecca Haight's twenty yard run setup Myles for her third try of the first half. Durkin continued the back and forth with Myles, becoming the second Bobcat with three tries after a stolen scrum by Quinnipiac. Navy finally got on the board for a second time minutes before the half, but Myles was able to score for a fourth time before the clock expired. QU led 59-14 at the break with four Bobcats scoring tries.
Stimson started the Bobcat scoring in the second half with a 45 yard try, dragging three Midshipmen with her in the process. Durkin followed by scoring back-to-back tries for her fourth and fifth of the day. Trying to keep pace with her teammate, Myles scored the next try for her fifth and final score. With the game at 87-19, Durkin again scored back-to-back tries, this time to close out the game. Her final score broke Natalie Kosko's Quinnipiac record of six tries in a game.
Durkin ranks second on the team with 12 tries after entering the game with five on the season. Myles came into the contest against Navy with just one score in 2014.
Up next, Quinnipiac will finish their regular season at home for Senior Day on Nov. 8. The Bobcats will host West Chester at 12 PM.
