Bobcats Open Season Saturday Night vs. Stony Brook
HAMDEN, Conn – It's been almost one full calendar year since the last time the Quinnipiac women's tennis team competed.
And on Saturday, March 6 – the Bobcats are back.
Quinnipiac opens the spring 2021 season on Saturday, March 6, hosting Stony Brook at 6:30 PM at the North Haven Health & Racquet Club.
"Everyone is hungry and motivated to have a successful season." Quinnipiac Head Coach/Director of Tennis Paula Miller said. "The nerves will be high for everyone, even for our seniors who haven't played in awhile. I don't want to put too much pressure on them… I just want them to go out there and give it their best."
Miller enters her eighth season as Director of Tennis and Women's Tennis Head Coach in 2020-21. The four-time MAAC Coach of the Year has led Quinnipiac women's tennis to five MAAC Tournament titles and five NCAA Tournament appearances (2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18).
Miller has helped lead the Bobcats' women's program to 86 wins since 2013-14, as the program tallied 10+ wins each season from 2013-2019. Quinnipiac went 43-0 in regular season MAAC matches during that span.
The Bobcats' fall 2020 season was cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, meaning that Quinnipiac will have just Saturday's match vs. Stony Brook to help prepare for MAAC play. QU's second match of the season is on Friday, March 12, as the Bobcats travel to conference foe Niagara.
Miller and the Bobcats won four matches during the 2019-20 pandemic-shortened season.
The Bobcats return seniors Dominique Vasile, Payton Bradley and Stephanie Yanosov to the 2020-21 roster. Bradley won seven singles matches and five doubles matches last year.
Junior Kamilla Nella (eight singles wins, five doubles wins in '19-20) also returns, as do sophomores Andie Williams and Jordan Bradley. Williams won nine singles matches during her first-year season, and Jordan Bradley won seven.
"The team has been working hard on the court and in the classroom… I couldn't be more proud of them," Miller said. "I'm just excited that Quinnipiac is allowing us to play. We're really excited to start competing."
Quinnipiac was selected No. 1 in the Preseason MAAC Coaches' Poll, as announced on Feb. 24 by the league office.
"I'm ready to just compete, and whatever the season brings, it brings. It's just excitement at this point, our group deserves this opportunity to compete."
