Bobcats Return to Top 20 in National Poll, Ranked No. 16 in Pairwise Rankings
HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team is back in the national rankings as the Bobcats are ranked No. 20 in the USCHO.com Division I Men's Poll, as announced by the organization Monday afternoon.
Quinnipiac is tied with the Big Ten's Michigan State for No. 20 in the nation after receiving 58 points in the poll voting. The Bobcats are back in USCHO's Top 20 for the first time since Nov. 4 when the Bobcats were No. 15 in the nation.
In addition to Quinnipiac's poll ranking, the Bobcats are tied for 16th in the Pairwise Rankings with Michigan State. The PairWise Ranking is a system which attempts to mimic the method used by the NCAA Selection Committee to determine participants for the NCAA Division I men's hockey tournament. The PWR compares all teams by these criteria: record against common opponents, head-to-head competition, and the RPI.
The Bobcats went on a season-best six-game winning streak from Nov. 30 through Jan. 10, starting with a win at then-No. 10/10 UMass running through a 3-2 win at St. Lawrence. Most recently, Quinnipiac's winning streak came to an end with a 5-2 loss at then-No. 7/8 Clarkson to snap what was the nation's longest winning streak at the time.
Last weekend, Peter DiLiberatore (Bedford, Nova Scotia) extended his point streak to six games, tied for the longest in his career, with an assist Friday night and his fourth goal of the season on Saturday.
Alex Whelan (Ramsey, New Jersey) scored two power-play goals for the Bobcats at St. Lawrence for his fourth career multi-goal game while Zach Metsa (Delafield, Wisconsin) scored the game-winning goal that night and added an assist. Skyler Brind'Amour (Raleigh, North Carolina) recorded his third multi-point game with a goal and an assist at Clarkson on Saturday.
The Bobcats return to non-conference play for the next three games, beginning Friday night with a trip to the Hart Center in Worcester, Massachusetts, to take on Holy Cross with puck drop set for 7 p.m.
