Bobcats Head into Playoffs as No. 5 Team in the Nation After Winning Fourth Cleary Cup
HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team remained No. 5 in the final national polls of the 2018-19 regular season, as announced Monday afternoon.
Quinnipiac is the No. 5 in the USCHO.com Division I Men's Poll, increasing 24 points to 805, a season-high for the Bobcats in the poll. The Bobcats also remained the No. 5 team in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Men's College Hockey Poll, receiving 375 points in the poll, moving up 11 points from the week before.
As of March 4, the Bobcats are also No. 5 in the PairWise rankings, which serves as a system which attempts to mimic the method used by the NCAA Selection Committee to determine participants for the NCAA Division I men's hockey tournament. The PWR compares all teams by these criteria: record against common opponents, head-to-head competition, and the RPI.
The Bobcats recorded their sixth weekend sweep of the 2018-19 season by downing Brown and Yale 4-1 each night. Quinnipiac wrapped up the season going 4-1-1 over the final six games and clinch the No. 1 seed of the ECAC Hockey Tournament and were co-regular season champions.
Quinnipiac's Cleary Cup title was its fourth in the last seven seasons, and first since the 2015-16 season when the Bobcats also won its Whitelaw Cup.
Nick Jermain (Norwalk, Connecticut) led the Bobcats with three goals and one assist for four points. Jermain's three goals were second in ECAC Hockey and tied for the league lead with four points.
TJ Friedmann (St. Louis, Missouri) tallied goals in back-to-back games for the first time in his career and tallied two goals on the weekend while Ethan de Jong (North Vancouver, British Columbia) had a goal and an assist.
Scott Davidson (Trail, British Columbia), Joe O'Connor (Hamden, Connecticut) and Peter DiLiberatore (Bedford, Nova Scotia) all recorded two assists on the weekend.
Quinnipiac recorded a first round bye in the 2019 ECAC Hockey Tournament and will await their quarterfinal opponent for their series schedule for March 15-17 at the Frank Perrotti Jr. Arena.
