HAMDEN, Conn. – With just over two weeks of preseason practice under the belts of the Quinnipiac field hockey team, the Bobcats are ready and eager to get the 2018 season underway Friday afternoon against the Boston College Eagles at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey Stadium.
The Bobcats are coming off a fifth-place finish in the BIG EAST in 2017 where they finished 3-4 in conference play and were 6-12 overall.
2017 Recap
Quinnipiac just missed out on qualifying for the 2017 BIG EAST Championship for the first time in program history as they finished tied with Villanova for fifth, just one position behind Providence for the final playoff spot. Dayna Barlow '18 finished with a team-leading 18 points while she tied with Lauren Belskie '18 for first on the team with 18 goals. Michelle Federico also was a team leader with five goals and six assists for 16 points. Belskie scored five of her seven goals in BIG EAST play to earn All-BIG EAST First Team honors and a spot on the NFHCA Division I All-Mideast Second Team.
Scouting Boston College
The Eagles come into the 2018 campaign coming off an 11-8 season in 2017 and a 0-6 record in ACC play. Ymke Rose Gote and Frederique Haverhals each earned All-ACC honors in 2017 as well as the NFHCA All-Northeast Region First Team and All-America Third Team honors. Both have been named captains for a second season in a row and were joined by Lucy Lytle as team leaders. Earlier this offseason, Haverhals was named to the Preseason All-ACC Team. This season, Boston College will face teams from the BIG EAST, Big Ten, America East, CAA, Ivy League and Patriot League in addition to their challenging ACC slate.
Scouting Vermont
The Catamounts are coming off a challenging 2017 season in which they finished 5-12 and were 1-7 in America East play. Current seniors Landon Warren and Olivia Hurd were each honored last season by the America East as Warren was named to the East Division All-Conference Team and Hurd was named to the All-Academic Team. Warren scored 14 goals for Vermont, the fifth most by a Catamount in a season in program history.
Leaders on the Field
Senior Elisa Ruiz Martinez (Madrid, Spain) and junior Valerie Perkins (Mohegan Lake, New York) have been tabbed as field managers for the upcoming season, providing strong leadership to a young core of Bobcats in 2018. Both stepped up in the spring and have been valuable in their roles with the team.
Preseason Honors
Elisa Ruiz Martinez was named to the 2018 Preseason All-BIG EAST team, rewarding her for an impressive 2017 season in which she scored two goals and tallied three assists for seven points. In conference play, she had a goal and an assist for three points as one of Quinnipiac's top players in just their second season in the BIG EAST.
Bobkittens
This year's Quinnipiac squad features 12 newcomers to its 24-player team, including 11 freshmen and one graduate student player. This talented incoming class is Quinnipiac's first full recruiting class since joining the BIG EAST for the 2016 season.
Off-Field Success
Selina Reichert '18 was named to the 2018 CoSIDA Academic All-America At Large Team after she was one of 14 players named to the NFHCA National Academic Squad following the season. In addition to the national recognition, the Bobcats placed 19 players on the BIG EAST All-Academic Team to continue Quinnipiac's academic success.
New Coach in the Ranks
Head coach Becca Main made a splash in coaching circles as she hired three-time national champion Nina Klein after Klein wrapped up a four-year playing career with the UConn Huskies. She backstopped UConn to her third national championship in 2018 as the Huskies completed just the sixth perfect season in NCAA Division I Field Hockey history. Klein was a three-time NFHCA All-Mideast Region selection as well as having earned the 2017 NFHCA Division I National Scholar-Athlete of the Year after earning the highest GPA of any NFHCA All-American.
