HAMDEN, Conn. - Junior Proyfon Lohaphaisan was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Women' Tennis Player of the Week for matches through March 18, it was announced today by the league office.
Lohaphaisan had a strong week on Quinnipiac's Spring Break trip to the IMG Tennis Academy in Bradenton, Florida, finishing with a 4-2 record. After narrow losses at No. 5 singles (6-4 in the third set) and No. 3 doubles (6-4) against Navy on Tuesday, Lohaphaisan moved up a line in both singles and doubles in the Bobcats' doubleheader on Thursday against Colgate and Bryant and ended up with a personal sweep of the day in Quinnipiac's two 5-2 wins.
Against Colgate, Lohaphaisan and freshman Dominique Vasile picked up a convincing 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles, and she then outlasted Kelly Klein in three sets at No. 4 singles (3-6, 6-4, 6-1) to finish off the scoring. Against Bryant, in a match where everything was closely contested, she helped the Bobcats pick up the doubles point with a dramatic 7-6 comeback win at No. 2 doubles (11-9 in the tiebreaker) with Vasile. She then capped off a 4-0 day with a 6-7, 7-5, 11-9 over Nina Luiggi of Bryant.
For the season, Lohaphaisan now leads the Bobcats with a 13-7 singles record, giving her one more win than junior Jennifer Lu for the team lead. She is also 7-8 in doubles, including 4-2 while playing in the No. 2 spot.
Quinnipiac is back in action for two matches this weekend, taking on Niagara on Saturday in the first MAAC match of the spring season at the North Haven Health and Racquet Club, and then traveling to Harvard on Sunday.
