Quinnipiac broadcasting legend Bill Schweizer will call the final two games of his career this weekend. The "Voice of the Bobcats" will have the play-by-play, alongside long-time partner Billy Mecca, for Quinnipiac men's basketball's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament game against Siena on Thursday, Mar. 1 as well as the men's ice hockey team's matchup against Yale in the first game of the Bobcats' best-of-three ECAC Hockey First Round Series at Ingalls Rink on Friday, Mar. 2.
Schweizer's career will end after 21 years and thousands of games in a trek that began in 1997 as Quinnipiac was preparing to make the leap to the NCAA Division I level. Quinnipiac administration sought a professional with credentials to legitimize Quinnipiac's presence on the airwaves on AM 1220 WQUN, the schools flagship station. Since then,
he has been a constant on press row for Quinnipiac men's and women's basketball and men's ice hockey.
While at Quinnipiac, Schweizer coordinated all sports broadcasts for WQUN Radio, served as a part-time professor in the QU School of Communications, teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in sports broadcasting, and was a reporter for the magazine-type show "Bobcats Unleashed" on NESN, which was nominated for three New England Emmy Awards. In 2014, Schweizer was inducted into the Quinnipiac Athletics Hall of Fame and last year he was Quinnipiac's named to the MAAC Honor Roll Class of 2017 and honored at the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame.
Prior to coming to Quinnipiac, Schweizer held numerous anchor and reporter positions in several sports and worked dozens of high-profile events over an impressive 45-year career. Schweizer has broadcast seven Olympiads, including the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles and the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan, and served as a radio play-by-play announcer for NFL Sunday Night Games. As a baseball broadcaster, Schweizer handled radio play-by-play for the MLB Game of the Week and served as co-host alongside former Detroit Tigers' great Alan Trammel on "Inside Pitch", a two-hour baseball talk show that aired prior to the Sunday Night Baseball Broadcast on the CBS Radio Network. He was also a play-by-play announcer for NCAA Basketball Regional action and was the voice of the 1985 Villanova Wildcats during their first NCAA National Championship season.
