HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac men's lacrosse team had four players chosen to the Preseason All-MAAC team in a vote of the league's coaches, it was announced today by the conference office.
Senior Adam Bellamy (Saint Catherines, Ontario) was named the Preseason Long-Stick Midfielder of the Year and senior Will Vitelli (Milford, Conn.) was chosen as the Preseason Face-Off Specialist of the Year. Junior midfielder Foster Cuomo (Oakville, Ontario) and senior defenseman Riley Palmer (Oshawa, Ontario - pictured) were also named to the Preseason All-MAAC team at their respective positions.
As a team, the Bobcats were picked to finish third in the MAAC by the league's coaches. Defending champion Monmouth was a unanimous selection to repeat this season, while Marist was chosen to finish second ahead of Quinnipiac. Rounding out the poll were Detroit Mercy in fourth, Siena in fifth, Canisius in sixth and Manhattan in seventh.
Bellamy was named the MAAC Long-Stick Midfielder of the Year as a sophomore in 2016, when he helped the Bobcats to the MAAC championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance. Despite missing some action a year ago with an injury, Bellamy ranked first on the Bobcats with 48 ground balls, including nine in a win over Manhattan.
Vitelli has won the MAAC Face-off Specialist of the Year Award in each of the last two years after walking on to the team as a freshman. A year ago, he won 59 percent of his face-offs, including 19-of-22 against NJIT and 17-of-22 against Manhattan. During his sophomore season, he recorded the fifth-best single-game face-off performance in NCAA history with a 19-for-19 effort against Marist, earning him the National Player of the Week Award.
Cuomo finished last season with 14 goals and nine assists for the Bobcats, capping off the year with three goals and three assists at Canisius when he moved up to attack from his usual midfield spot. He also had 22 goals and 11 assists as a freshman, earning second-team All-MAAC honors, scoring 11 of his goals in four postseason games (including four in an NCAA Tournament win over Hartford).
Palmer was a second-team All-MAAC selection last year while starting every game on the close defense. He has played in all 42 games as a Bobcat, beginning his career as a long-stick midfielder as a freshman, and playing the last two seasons on the close defense. He had 18 ground balls last year, while tying for team-high honors with 13 caused turnovers.
Quinnipiac opens up its 2018 season in 10 days when it hosts UMass Lowell in the first-ever game at the new 1,500-seat Quinnipiac Lacrosse Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 12 noon.
