
Sitilia Rencheli, Layla Rodriguez and Paula Miller Receive MAAC Honors at MAAC Tennis Awards Banquet

WEST WINDSOR, New Jersey – Quinnipiac women's tennis senior Sitilia Rencheli (Sarasota, Florida) was named the MAAC Women's Tennis Player of the Year, Layla Rodriguez (Rancho Santa Margarita, California) was named MAAC Rookie of the Year and head coach Paula Miller has been named the 2017 MAAC Women's Tennis Coach of the Year, as announced at the league banquet on Friday, April 28.
Rencheli's Player of the Year honor is the first of her career and she is the second player in program history to receive the award, as Sophia Dzulynsky won the award twice. Rencheli had a tremendous season for the Bobcats, posting an overall MAAC record of 11-1 with a perfect 6-0 doubles record in MAAC play.
Miller was named the Coach of the Year for the third consecutive season after guiding the Bobcats to their fourth straight MAAC Regular Season Title. The Bobcats also went undefeated in the MAAC for the fourth consecutive season, now armed with a 36-0 record since joining the conference in the 2013-14 season. Miller is the first MAAC coach to earn at least three consecutive Coach of the Year honors in the league since Rick McLure of Loyola received his final MAAC Coach of the Year award in 2011-12.
Rodriguez was also voted as the MAAC Women's Tennis Rookie of the Year. Rodriguez is the first player in program history to win the award. Rodriguez went 13-1 in MAAC play, going 7-0 in doubles play.
Overall seven different Bobcats were honored with All-MAAC honors in either singles or doubles play, including a Quinnipiac sweep in the First Team All-MAAC singles categories.
Rencheli was named to the All-MAAC First Team at No. 1 singles. It is the second time that Rencheli was named to the All-MAAC first team in singles as she took home the award in No. 3 singles last season. Rencheli went an impressive 5-1 from the No. 1 singles spot this season.
Jennifer Lu (Cypress, California) was a unanimous selection for the No. 2 singles All-MAAC First Team award. Lu went an impressive 7-0 in MAAC singles play and 5-0 from the No. 2 spot.
Rachel Horton (Stamford, Connecticut) was a unanimous selection for the No. 3 All-MAAC First Team award. Horton went 6-0 in MAAC play and 4-0 from the No. 3 spot. This is the second time in her career that Horton was named to the All-MAAC singles team after she was recognized from her accomplishments from the No. 5 spot during her sophomore year.
Sydney Young (Austin, Texas) was the third Bobcat unanimous selection, as she was named to the All-MAAC first team for No. 4 singles. Young went a perfect 7-0 in MAAC singles play, with all wins coming from the No. 4 spot. It is the third time in Young's career that she has been named to the All-MAAC First Team for singles and second from the No. 4 spot.
Rodriguez was named to the All-MAAC First Team for No. 5 singles as well. Rodriguez went 6-1 in MAAC play and 4-1 from the No. 5 spot. Proyfon Lohaphaisan closed the All-MAAC First Team sweep for Quinnipiac, as she took home the award from the No. 6 spot. It is the second season in a row that Lohaphaisan has taken home the honor. Lohaphaisan went 6-1 in MAAC singles play and 4-1 in the No. 6 spot.
The Bobcats also took home three doubles awards. The duo of Kelsi Oliphant (Calgary, Alberta) and Rencheli were named to the All-MAAC First team from the No. 2 doubles spot. It is the second time that Rencheli has been named to the All-MAAC first team and first time for Oliphant. The duo went 9-0 together during the season, with all wins coming from the No. 2 spot.
Lu and Rodriguez took home the First Team All-MAAC doubles honors from the No. doubles spot after going 9-0 as a duo and 8-0 from the No. 3 spot. Lu earned the same honors last season as well. Horton and Young took home All-MAAC Second-Team honors as well from the No. 1 doubles spot. The duo earned 24 wins on the season, which was tops on the team. Half of the senior duo's wins came from the No.1 singles spot.
Seven players were also selected to the MAAC All-Academic Team. Quinnipiac's seven selections were the most by any school in the conference this season. Alexandra Mircea (Glen Rock, New Jersey), Horton, Lohaphaisan, Lu, Oliphant, Rencheli and Young were all honored.
The Quinnipiac women's tennis team will open up the 2017 MAAC Tournament on Saturday, April 29 at 10 AM when it faces the No. 4 seed Fairfield Stags at the Mercer County Park Tennis Center in West Windsor, New Jersey.
