
Alex Whelan Named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week

Quinnipiac men's ice hockey freshman forward Alex Whelan (Ramsey, New Jersey) was named the ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league on Tuesday, March 14, 2017. Quinnipiac has now grabbed the rookie of the week award in three consecutive weeks after Andrew Shortridge won the last two honors.
In the Bobcats' Quarterfinal series at St. Lawrence, Whelan led Quinnipiac to the best-of-three win with two goals and an assist for a team-leading three points. Whelan was the only player in the Bobcats line-up to score in back-to-back games. For the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals, Whalen led all ECAC Hockey freshmen in goals (2) and points (3), as well as game-winning goals (1), game-winning assists (1) and shots on goal (8).
Whelan also leads all ECAC Hockey freshman in scoring for the tournament with three goals and two assists for five points. On Saturday, Mar. 12, Whelan helped the Bobcats even the series with a goal and an assist in a 3-2 victory, with his goal coming just 16 seconds into regulation before setting up Craig Martin with the game-winner. On Sunday, Whelan's second goal of the series and third of the postseason stood as the game-winner in a 3-2 win to clinch the series and send Quinnipiac back to the ECAC Hockey Semifinals for the fifth-consecutive season. Whelan also posted a team-high +2 for the weekend.
For the season, the first-year Bobcats has accumulated six goals and four assists for 10 points while suiting up for 35 games as a freshman. Whelan previously played for the New Jersey Hitmen of the USPHL Premier League in 2015-16 where he scored 18 goals and assisted on 35 more for 53 points in 44 games.
Quinnipiac is in action this weekend as it travels to Lake Placid, New York in search of its second-straight Whitelaw Cup. The Bobcats face tournament top seed and nationally-ranked No. 2 Harvard in the ECAC Hockey Championship Semifinals on Friday, Mar. 17 at 4:05 p.m.
