QU Men's Cross Country (3.58) Achieved Eighth-Best Team GPA in the Nation, Women (3.66) Tied for 25th
HAMDEN, Connecticut – Quinnipiac's men's and women's cross country programs both were bestowed by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) with NCAA Div. I Academic Team Awards, as announced on Thursday, February 9th.
Eligibility for the academic team award requires at least a 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale), while the NCAA Div. I Scholar Team of the Year goes to the top finishing team for their respective gender at the NCAA Championships (men – Northern Arizona, women – University of Oregon).
Overall, there were 431 teams that earned the distinction from the USTFCCCA for their efforts both athletically and academically. Of those 431 teams, 242 were women's programs and 189 were men's.
Quinnipiac's men put forth incredible academic success as the team's 3.58 cumulative GPA through the 2016 fall semester was good enough for the eighth-highest team GPA in the nation. A total of eight members of the program out of 11 eligible (non-freshmen) student-athletes (Ryan Ansel, Brendan Copley, Kaelan Hayes, Ben Lanza, Kyle Liang, Tyler Mannion, Connor McAlary and Sal Siciliano) were named to the MAAC All-Academic Team in the fall for achieving a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 on a 4.0 scale.
Quinnipiac's women also impressed with a cumulative team GPA of 3.66 that tied for the 25th-highest mark in the nation. Thirteen members of the program out of 17 eligible Bobcats (Niamh Ashe, Kylie Cardoso, Cameron Chaplen, Darby Ginley, Emma Johnson, Alexandra Kowalski, Medinah Nabadduka, Marykate O'Meara, Maria Ricalton, Kaleigh Roberts, Chelsea Saage, Katey Veron and Emily Wolff) picked up MAAC All-Academic Team honors in the fall.
