HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac volleyball team, currently on the outside looking in, will try to play its way back into contention for the MAAC Tournament when it travels to Rider and Saint Peter's this weekend.
• Quinnipiac is current;y 6-8 in the MAAC in seventh place and will likely need to win three of its last four to qualify in order ro move up to sixth, needing to catch either Canisius (8-6), Rider (8-6) or Iona (8-7). The Bobcats close out next week at home against Canisius and second-place Niagara.
• Quinnipiac won the first meeting with Rider 3-1, and a win in the rematch would give the Bobcats a potential tiebreaker advantage with the Broncs. The Bobcats are also 1-0 against Canisus so far with a rematch at home, but lost both to Iona. The Bobcats swept its first match with Saint Peter's, which remains winless on the year.
• The first meeting with Rider saw senior Elizabeth Kloos record a career-high 20 kills in 34 attempts, including nine in the decisive fourth set.
• Sophomore setter Maria Pansari became only the third Quinnipiac setter to reach 2,000 career assists at Marist on Oct. 23. She enters this weekend with 2,129 assists in less than two full seasons, on an early pace to break the school mark of 4.519 set by Jen McClain ('99).
• Sophomore Natalie Alechko, who missed the first Iona and Manhattan matches with an injury, has a wide lead on the Bobcats with 265 kills this season, including a career-high 25 in a win at Canisius.
• Quinnipiac finished last season with a 21-13 record, an 18-win improvement over the 2015 campaign, he largest turnaround in the nation last year.
• The Bobcats have been without both of their co-captains, senior Elizabeth Kloos and junior Jen Coffey, since September due to injury. Kloos ranks fourth all-time in Quinnipiac history at the Division I level with 771 career kills, while Coffey ranks fifth with 757 (see chart below).
