HAMDEN, Conn. - For the third time in the season's first five weeks, the Quinnipiac volleyball team had two players earn weekly honors from the MAAC, as junior middle hitter Elizabeth Kloos (Munster, Ind.) was named the Player of the Week and freshman Alejandra Rodriguez (Toa Alta, P.R.) was named the Libero of the Week, it was announced today by the conference office.
The awards come after a 3-0 week which saw the program continue to make history. The Bobcats moved to 5-0 in the MAAC with the three wins, putting them alone in first (ahead of 4-0 Fairfield and 3-0 Marist in the win column), while defeating both Siena and Iona for the first time in program history (after coming in with 0-15 and 0-13 records in the series, respectively). Quinnipiac also extended its winning streak to six matches in a row, the longest in the program's Division I history.
Kloos had a spectacular week hitting for the Bobcats, tallying an even .500 percentage over the three matches. She was especially dominant at home over the weekend, hitting 7-for-11 (.636) in a three-set sweep of Iona and following up with a 12-for-17 (.706) effort in a three-set sweep of Manhattan. Kloos wins the award for the second time this season after also winning it two weeks ago when she helped the Bobcats to a share of the tournament title at Providence's Friar Classic on Sept. 9-10. Senior middle hitter Allison Leigh (Palmer, Alaska) also won the Player of the Week Award after the first week, giving the Bobcats three of the five winners so far this season.
Rodriguez continued to have a big impact on Quinnipiac's improved back row defense this season, leading the team in digs in all three matches. She had a spectacular effort in the win over Siena, tallying 21 digs in only three sets, two shy of her personal best set in an opening day win over Saint Francis (Pa.) in four sets. She added 10 more digs in the Iona win, while adding a service ace on set point for a 25-20 win in the second set, and tallied a team-high seven in a quick three-set win over Manhattan.
The Bobcats have now won a total of six MAAC awards this season. In addition to the two from Kloos, and the one apiece from Leigh and Rodriguez, freshman setter Maria Pansari (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) has twice been named the league's Rookie of the Week, once teaming with Leigh to give the Bobcats the Player/Rookie sweep, and then doing the same with Kloos after the Friar Classic.
Quinnipiac will be back in action this weekend for two more home matches, when they take on Canisius on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Niagara on Sunday at 1 p.m. The program was also featured today on ESPN.com in Vicki Friedman's weekly volleyball roundup (click here).
