2016 MAAC Champions Look to Defend Their Crown on Oct. 29 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports
HAMDEN, Connecticut – The defending MAAC Championship Quinnipiac women's cross country team has released their 2016 schedule, as announced by reigning MAAC Coach of the Year Carolyn Martin. The 2016 slate features six meets leading up to the MAAC Championships held this year at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.
The reigning title holders open the year at the Stony Brook Invitational on Sept. 3 before heading to Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx on Sept. 16 for the Iona Meet of Champions. Iona's home meet is an important one for the Bobcats as they will meet up against a majority of their conference foes while also gaining experience racing at the home course for the 2016 NCAA Northeast Regional.
A year after making program history, the Bobcats return for the 43rd annual Paul Short Run on the campus of Lehigh University on Oct. 1. The Bobcats are coming off a program-best 10th place finish out of 35 teams at the 2015 running of the Paul Short Run. Just one year removed from placing 23rd out of 38 teams in 2014, four Bobcats placed in the Top 100 in a crowded field of 313 runners last season.
Just one week later, the Bobcats return to Franklin Park in Boston for the New England Championships on Oct. 8. The site of another landmark achievement in 2015, the Bobcats finished as the runner-up last season which stands as their highest finish at the meet since taking the championship in 2007.
One key addition to the 2016 slate from previous years is the Pre-National Invitational held in Terre Haute, Indiana on Oct. 15. A heavy-hitting field draws teams from all across the nation looking to gain valuable experience running at the site of the national championship course. The Bobcats will be making their first-ever appearance in the illustrious meet that takes place at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course, home to the 2016 NCAA Championships.
A return home brings an appearance at the CCSU Mini Meet on Oct. 21 before the Bobcats will take a flight down to Florida for the 2016 MAAC Championships on Oct. 29. A year after finishing dethroning the 10-time defending conference champions Iona, Quinnipiac looks to defend the program's first MAAC title in what will be their first appearance at the ESPN Wide World of Sports course. The Bobcats return three All-MAAC performers including the conference runner-up senior Niamh Ashe (East Islip, New York) as well as juniors Emily Wolff (Highlands Ranch, Colorado) and Kaleigh Roberts (Higganum, Connecticut).
Every year, the MAAC hosts the championships of one of four fall sports (men's and women's cross country, women's soccer, men's soccer and women's volleyball) down at the ESPN Wide World of Sports campus and the 2016 season will feature the cross country championships.
The Championship season ends in the coming month as the NCAA Northeast Regional is slated for Nov. 11 at the Van Cortlandt Park course before the NCAA Championships commence on Nov. 19. Last season, the Bobcats finished 18th out of 38 teams in the NCAA Northeast Regional in a meet that saw three Bobcats place in the Top 100.
