HAMDEN, Connecticut – The Quinnipiac women's tennis team has been selected to travel to Coral Gables, Florida to face the No. 7 overall seed Miami Hurricanes in the first round of the 2016 NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament. The Bobcats will face the Hurricanes on Friday, May 13 with the time still to be determined.
The Bobcats qualified for their ninth NCAA tournament after defeating Marist, 4-3, in the 2016 MAAC Tournament. The win was Quinnipiac's third consecutive MAAC Tournament Championship title as they extended their winning streak in the MAAC to 29 matches.
Overall, the Bobcats have won nine conference championships dating back to the 2004 season when they were a member of the Northeast Conference. This season marks the second time in program history they have won three straight conference championships after winning five straight from 2004-08.
The University of Miami is the No. 7 overall after compiling a 19-5 record and falling to the North Carolina Tar Heels in the ACC Championship match on Sunday, Apr. 24. Miami has four players nationally-ranked in the top 70 for singles play, highlighted by No. 8 Stephanie Wagner and No. 9 Sinead Lohan. Yolimar Ogando is ranked No. 42 and Wendy Zhang is ranked No. 70. Zhang and Wagner are also the No. 10 ranked doubles team in the country while Wagner and Clementina Riobueno is ranked No. 64.
Also traveling to the Coral Gables Regional will be the Wichita St. Shockers (27-3) and the TCU Horned Frogs (15-6). Miami is the top seed in the region and the No. 7 overall seed for the tournament. The University of California earned the top overall seed in the tournament followed by Florida, North Carolina, Ohio St. and Georgia.
