
QU Men's Ice Hockey's Soren Jonzzon and Sam Anas Named To CoSIDA Academic All-District At-Large Team

HAMDEN, Connecticut – Quinnipiac men's ice hockey's Soren Jonzzon (Mountain View, California) and Sam Anas (Potomac, Maryland) were named to the 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-District At-Large Team for District One, as announced by CoSIDA on Thursday, May 12, 2016.
For Jonzzon, it marks the second-consecutive year that the Bobcats' captain was honored by CoSIDA, while Anas received his first recognition. The duo grabbed two of the 10 spots in the District 1 team which is comprised of NCAA Division I institutions in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont. Jonzzon and Anas are now eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-American Team honors, which will be voted on by the CoSIDA membership and announced later this month.
To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution. Nominated athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games. Nominees in graduate school must have a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or better both as an undergrad and in grad school.
Jonzzon completed his undergraduate degree in May 2015 with a 3.94 grade-point average in biomedical health sciences, and will complete his master's degree in May 2016 with a 4.00 GPA. Jonzzon was a senior captain for Quinnipiac in 2015-16, leading the Bobcats to their third ECAC Hockey Regular-Season Championship in four years, its first ECAC Hockey Tournament Championship, the NCAA East Regional Championship, a NCAA Frozen Four victory before completing the year as runner-ups in the National Championship game. Jonzzon had a career year on the ice, scoring 10 goals while assisting on 10 more for 20 points and also scored two game-winners.
Anas completed his bachelor's degree this season before signing with Minnesota Wild of the National Hockey League. Anas is coming off one of the best seasons in Quinnipiac men's ice hockey history where he was named to the AHCA/CCM All-America First Team, ECAC Hockey First Team, New England Division I Men's Hockey All-Star and NCAA Tournament All-East Region Team. He led ECAC Hockey and the team in goals (24), points (50), power-play goals (10), power-play assists (14) and power-play points (24). He also finished second on the team with 26 assists.
For his career, Anas tallied 69 goals and 63 assists for 132 points. His 69 goals are the second most in Quinnipiac Division I history while his 132 points in just three seasons rank 10th in Division I program history. As a freshman, Anas was named the Hockey Commissioners' Association Tim Taylor National Rookie of the Year and ECAC Hockey Co-Rookie of the Year, and followed that up as a sophomore with AHCA/CCM Hockey All-American Second Team honors.
