HAMDEN, Conn. - Sophomore faceoff specialist Will Vitelli was named the StringKing National Player of the Week by Inside Lacrosse Magazine for games through April 3, after his dominant performance in an 8-7 overtime win over Marist on Saturday.
Vitelli earned 26.55 percent of the Inside Lacrosse fan vote to give him a narrow win over a tight field of candidates, which included top performers from Duke, Penn State, and Brown, among others.
Vitelli had a perfect day at the faceoff X in the narrow win over preseason MAAC favorite Marist in a battle for first place in the conference standings. He won all 19 of Quinnipiac's faceoffs, including 9-for-9 in the fourth quarter as the Bobcats rallied from a 5-1 deficit to tie the score with only three seconds left in regulation on a goal from senior attack Ryan Keenan. Quinnipiac would then finish off the big win with one second left in overtime on a goal from sophomore attack Anthony Carchietta.
After going 19-for-19 at the X against Marist, Vitteli is now 35-of-40 on faceoffs in MAAC play through the first two games, after also going 16-of-21 in Quinnipiac's conference opener on April 2 against Siena. The Bobcats are now 5-3 on the year and Vitelli has put up big performances in four of those wins, including 13-of-20 in a 9-7 win over NJIT and 15-of-22 in a 12-6 win over Bellarmine.
Vitelli's honor capped off a big week of awards, as he was also named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Week for his performance in the Marist win. He became the third different Bobcat honored by the MAAC this season, joining two-time Defensive Player of the Week Jack Brust and Rookie of the Week Matt Frost.
Quinnipiac will next be in action when it puts its 2-0 MAAC record on the line for a road game at Detroit on Sunday, beginning at 10:30 a.m.
