The Quinnipiac University field hockey team hosted its 2015-16 Banquet on Saturday, April 9 to honor its seniors and award winners from the 2015-16 season. Bobcats head coach Becca Main, associate head coach Cheryl Canada and assistant coach Kelsey Hiltebeitel hosted the event at Eli's on Whitney in Hamden, Connecticut.
Lauren Belskie (Hillborough, New Jersey) was honored with the Nina Walker Most Improved Player Award; Haley Swartz (Downington, Pennsylvania) won the Team Zag Award; Savanna Reilly (Hamden, Connecticut) was chosen as the team's Best Offensive Player of the Year while Dayna Barlow (Port Elizabeth, South Africa) was named the Best Midfielder Player of the Year. Megan Osanitsch (Harwinton, Connecticut) received the Jill DiSanti-Best Defensive Player of the Year and the Tara Thibeault-Most Valuable Player awards.
The Nina Walker Most Improved Player award is awarded to the student-athlete who has made the most progress in one season on the field. Belskie was honored after seeing her playing time increase from her freshman year to this past year as a sophomore. The second-year Bobcat emerged as a full-time starter, scoring three goals and assisting on another for seven points while also ranking among the national leaders in defensive saves with six.
The Team Zag Award is given to a player that thinks "outside-the-box" on the field, while also displaying creativity in competition while also giving back to the community. Swartz has been one of the most visible student-athletes at Quinnipiac during her four years with the Bobcats, while also emerging as a tri-captain and one of the top defensive players in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Swartz most notable contribution to the community came when she organized an on-campus visit for Kendall Pallone on Halloween which included a princess-themed wheelchair costume designed by Swartz, who also invited more than 200 students to greet Kendall on the quad.
Reilly earned Offensive Player of the Year honors after leading the Bobcats in goals (9) and points (20). Reilly paced the Bobcats with three game-winning goals, including a marker with time expired against Rider to send Quinnipiac to the MAAC Championship game. Barlow earned Best Midfielder recognition after totaling five goals and four assists for 14 points, with four goals coming in three MAAC contests. Her most notable showing of the season came against Fairfield when her second goal of the game came in overtime to clinch a share of the 2015 MAAC Regular-Season Championship.
Osanitsch earned the Jill DiSanti-Best Defensive Player award and the Tara Thibeault MVP award after earning her second-consecutive MAAC First Team honor. Osanitsch – who broke the program record for games played – has helped to establish Quinnipiac as a defensive power. A two-time captain, Osanitsch was also honored with the Best Defensive Player award in 2014-15.
