HAMDEN, Connecticut – The national champion Quinnipiac women's rugby team saw six student-athletes – Mason Johnson (Olympia, Washington), Ilona Maher (Burlington, Vermont), Maggie Myles (Emmitsburg, Maryland), Flora Poole (Christchurch, New Zealand), Emily Roskopf (Pleasanton, California) and Hailey Wyatt (Breckenridge, Colorado) - named to the inaugural All-American team on Tuesday, March 29.
Each program's coaching staff nominated student-athletes, and the selectees were chosen on their performance over the course of the inaugural 2015 League championship fall season. The first All-American class recognizes 31 players from 19 states and three countries. Twelve seniors, six juniors, nine sophomores and four freshmen were selected. All 10 teams are represented, with champion Quinnipiac (six) and finalist Army (five) with the most representatives.
Johnson adds another individual honor to what has already been a banner year for the sophomore scrum half. Named the Most Valuable Player during the NCWVRA Tournament, Johnson tallied four assists and one try across the three-game run to the national championship for the Bobcats. In the championship game, Johnson tied for the team lead with two assists as she helped flipped the script on what was a nine-point lead for the Black Knights. After falling behind by nine, the Bobcats went on a 19-5 run that sealed a title-clinching 24-19 win over Army.
Maher provided dynamic scoring ability out of the forward position as the sophomore led the Bobcats with 25 tries in the 2015 season. Against American International College, Maher accounted for 25 of the 54 total points scored as she posted a career high five tries while adding an assist as she led the Bobcats to a 54-21 victory. In the NCWVRA quarterfinals against West Chester, Maher tied a program record dishing out six assists to go along with five tries as her six helpers tied the all-time single-game record first set by Elena Orlando. Her five tries also matched a career high.
Myles' had a tremendous junior year campaign in which she tallied 10 tries and played an instrumental role during the team's journey to the title game. In the semifinals against the perennial powerhouse Norwich, Myles scored two first half tries to help give the Bobcats to a 24-12 lead heading into the break. Less than two minutes into the second half, she broke through the Cadet back line to block the kick leading to another Quinnipiac score. In a 19-5 win over Life University early in the season, Myles contributed on all three scores, recording two tries and an assist.
Poole earned a distinguished All-American nod as the sophomore flank improved drastically on a freshman campaign that saw her appear in just two games. She tallied her first career try in a 43-5 win over Dartmouth as the second-year Bobcat busted out a 30-yard run for the final Quinnipiac score on the day. In the Bobcats' first meeting of the 2015 season against perennial power Norwich, Poole tallied four tackles as Quinnipiac limited the Cadets and scored their first all-time win over Norwich. Poole showcased her vastly improved play in the NCWVRA semifinals as she tallied two assists, including a highlight-reel 50-yard run before dishing to Myles for the score, as she helped ice away the 36-22 victory over Norwich.
Roskopf stands as one of just four freshmen to earn All-American honors as she paired with Maher to give the Bobcats an imposing, high-scoring and incredibly dynamic offensive attack. For the season, Roskopf finished second on the team with 17 tries but none proved more important than her title-clinching try that broke a tie and put the Bobcats ahead 24-19 with just six minutes remaining. Across three NCWVRA Tournament games, Roskopf racked up three tries and one assist including two tries in the title game alone.
Wyatt has steadied the Bobcats' defensive unit all throughout her three-year career and her leadership played a major role in the junior scrum half behind named to the inaugural All-American team. Her role in the middle for the Bobcats helped Quinnipiac dominate teams defensively all throughout the 2016 season, holding six of their 13 opponents to 10 points or less including four of which that were held to single digits. Wyatt recorded one try and her first career assist on the season.
Quinnipiac completed their season-long mission as the Bobcats rode a six-game win streak to end the season and secure the first national championship in school history. Quinnipiac finished the year 11-2 overall and 6-1 in NCVWRA action.
