Quinnipiac men's ice hockey head coach Rand Pecknold was named College Hockey New's Coach of the Year, as announced by the popular college hockey website on Wednesday, Mar. 23. Pecknold was previously honored with ECAC Hockey's Tim Taylor Coach of the Year award.
Pecknold is currently preparing for the 2016 NCAA Tournament East Regional, set to commence on Saturday, Mar. 26 when the top-seeded Bobcats take on RIT at 4:30 p.m. from the Times Union Center in Albany, New York. The Bobcats head coach is currently riding the most successful season in program history as Quinnipiac won its third Cleary Cup in four years - including the last two - and also clinching the Whitelaw Cup for the league's tournament championship. Quinnipiac is also 29-3-7 overall and a win away from tying the program's single-season win total.
Pecknold's past coaching honors include the 2013 Tim Taylor Coach of the Year award and the 2013 New England Hockey Writers' Association Clark Hodder Coach of the Year award, as well as the 2002 MAAC Hockey Coach of the Year and 2005 Atlantic Hockey Coach of the Year honors. Pecknold is a three-time Spencer Penrose Award finalist, given to the National Coach of the Year.
Quinnipiac's long-time head coach, currently in his 22nd season, has amassed 443 wins, good for the sixth most among active coaches and has guided the Bobcats to its fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament in 2016. Since the Bobcats run to the program's first Frozen Four in 2012-13, the Bobcats have compiled 106 wins - good for the most in NCAA Division I men's ice hockey.
