Quinnipiac
HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac men's basketball team will look to extend its current three-game win streak and put itself in stronger position for an opening round bye in the MAAC Tournament when it travels to take on Saint Peter's on Monday night at 7 p.m.
Both teams enter the game with identical 8-13 records, but have been moving in opposite directions of late. Three weeks ago, Saint Peter's stood at 6-1 in the MAAC and alone in first place, but the Peacocks have dropped five in a row to fall to 6-6 in league play, putting them in fifth place. Quinnipiac, meanwhile, has won its last three to move up to 5-7 in the MAAC and in eighth place, but now sits just one game behind Saint Peter's in the fifth spot (with Niagara and Fairfield also in between at 6-7). Over the last seven years, the Bobcats are now 40-10 in February, including 2-0 so far this season.
Quinnipiac enters the new week coming off its best performance of the season in a 79-53 win over Marist on Thursday. It was a balanced team effort as 12 different players scored, the first time that has happened in four years, while Marist was held to just 27.1 percent shooting, the first time in four years that Quinnipiac has held its opponent below 30 percent. Freshman guard Andrew Robinson (Takoma Park, Md.) had 15 first-half points on five three-pointers to lead the Bobcats in scoring, as Quinnipiac had a season-high 42 points from its bench.
The Bobcats continue to lead the nation in both total rebounds (44.9) and offensive rebounds (17.5) per game, looking to extend their streak of leading the country in at least one rebounding category for each of the last five years. Quinnipiac had a streak of four years in a row of leading the country in offensive rebounding, before West Virginia snapped it last year, when the Bobcats still led the nation in total rebounds and rebounding margin.
Quinnipiac has continued its strong rebounding tradition with some new faces this year, led by freshman Abdulai Bundu (Upper Marlboro, Md. - pictured), who averages 6.9 per game to rank sixth in the MAAC. Bundu came off the bench to start the season and is only averaging 22.4 minutes per game, but still ranks 20th in the nation in offensive rebounds per contest at 3.6. Per 40 minutes, Bundu is averaging 6.47 offensive rebounds per game, which is second in the country, behind only Jonathan Holton of West Virginia (7.0). Junior forward Donovan Smith (Chicago, Ill.) also ranks 10th in the MAAC in rebounding (6.3) and second in blocked shots (1.8).
Another category where Quinnipiac finds itself among the national leaders is three-point defense. After holding Marist to just 2-19 from behind the arc on Thursday, the Bobcats now rank 11th nationally in three-point defense, allowing opponents to shoot just 29.3 percent. Led by senior guard James Ford, Jr. (Hopewell, Va.), Quinnipiac has defended the top scoring guards in the MAAC exceptionally well, including holding MAAC-leading scorer Khallid Hart of Marist to just 10 points on 3-14 shooting on Thursday. A.J. English of Iona shot just 5-15 against the Bobcats, Marcus Gilbert of Fairfield was 2-10, and Justin Robinson of Monmouth was 7-22 in two games combined.
After facing Saint Peter's, the Bobcats will have another key MAAC road game on Thursday against Manhattan on ESPN3, before a quick turnaround for its next home game against Fairfield on Saturday at 2 p.m. (SNY TV).
