What's On Tap?
The Quinnipiac women's tennis team heads back indoors for a non-conference matchup with the Fordham Rams Wednesday afternoon as rain moved them off of the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts for the match at the North Haven Health and Racquet Club at 12:30 P.M.
Scouting the Rams
Fordham is 8-5 this season but have struggled as of late as they are 0-2 in their last two matches, including a conference loss to VCU on April 2. Destiny Grunin is an impressive 16-8 in singles play, including 8-4 in dual matches which is led by a 7-3 record at No. 5 singles. Sarah Ali is not too far behind with a 13-9 record in singles, going 8-3 in dual matches and 7-3 as the No. 2. Julie Leong is 12-10, including 5-5 at No. 4 while Ellie Ball has been the primary No. 1 with just a 4-17 mark overall with a 2-9 record as the No. 1. Leong and Estelle Wong have won the most doubles matches of any doubles team for Fordham, going 10-11 including 5-4 at No. 2 doubles. Ali and Ball have teamed up to go 8-10, including 7-6 as the No. 1 pair.
Last Time Out for the Bobcats
The Bobcats won their third MAAC match of the season in a MAAC Championship rematch in which the Bobcats were relentless, defeating the Fairfield Stags, 6-1. With the win, Quinnipiac extended its winning streak to four consecutive matches.
We're Going Streaking
The Quinnipiac women's tennis team is playing its best tennis of the season as they are riding a four-match winning streak heading into the mid-week clash with Fordham. The Bobcats have won, on average, nearly six of the seven points per match over the streak. All three of Quinnipiac's conference victories have come during the streak as well.
Undefeated in the MAAC
Since joining the MAAC prior to the 2013-14 season, the Bobcats have not lost a match to a MAAC opponent. The Bobcats were 10-0 last season, including a perfect 8-0 regular season conference record. This season, Quinnipiac has won all three of its conference matches, pushing its conference winning streak to 13 games.
Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Last week, Jacqueline Raynor (Garden City, New York) was named the MAAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week as well as the Division I ECAC Co-Women's Tennis Player of the Week. Raynor's MAAC Award was her second of the season. She won all four individual matches she played in, a streak which is now at six consecutive matches. She has won 32 matches this season.
Double Trouble
Raynor and Michelle Dassa (Marlboro, New Jersey) are also on a winning streak of their own, as they have won their doubles match in all four matches of the Bobcats' winning streak to push their win total together to 76. This season, Raynor and Dassa are 19-6 when playing together in doubles, the third most wins they have acquired while playing together in any season. Raynor and Dassa are now first and second in program history for career doubles wins, as Raynor is in first with 92 with Dassa trailing her with 83 doubles wins.
One Away
Senior Ariana Launie (Milton, Massachusetts) is just one win away from becoming the third active member of the 100-win club, joining Raynor and Dassa. Launie picked up a win against the Stags after her opponent went down with an injury, but the win put her at 99 career victories as she would become the 19th player in program history to win 100 matches.
MAAC Preseason Poll
The Bobcats were selected to repeat as MAAC Women's Tennis Champions as they received all nine first place votes to command 81 points in the MAAC Women's Tennis Preseason Coaches' Poll. Last season, the Bobcats cruised to their first conference championship in their new conference. The Bobcats then faced the Stanford Cardinal in the NCAA Tournament, but fell in the first round.
Up Next
The Bobcats will play two of their final three home matches of the season this weekend when they welcome MAAC opponents Rider and Siena on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 1 P.M., with Senior Day festivities on Sunday beginning at 12:30 P.M. to honor Raynor, Dassa and Launie.
