2015 SEASON OPENER
The Quinnipiac men's lacrosse team opens the 2015 season on Saturday, Feb. 21 when the Bobcats head to Brown University in what has developed into an annual event. This meeting marks the fifth straight year that the New England foes will square off in the season opener for both teams. Faceoff is set for 1 p.m. at Cliff Stevenson Field in Providence.
ALL-TIME AGAINST BROWN
Quinnipiac and Brown meet for the seventh time on Sunday, with the Bears holding a 5-1 advantage in the all-time series. Members of the Bobcats current roster experienced the lone win though, when Quinnipiac held off Brown in impressive fashion in a 9-7 victory back in 2013. Last season, Brown snatched revenge with a 13-6 triumph – pulling away in the third quarter. Quinnipiac is 1-4 against Brown when playing on the road.
SCOUTING THE BEARS
Brown posted an 8-6 record last year, but went 2-4 in league play and missed out on the conference tournament. In 2014, Cornell, Harvard and Penn made NCAA Tournament appearances, Yale was in the mix until the last weekend of the season and Princeton had a Tewaaraton finalist. In the first poll to be released, Inside Lacrosse tabbed Brown to finish sixth out of seven teams in the preseason poll. Brown returns two important pieces from last season, sophomore attack Dylan Molloy and junior goalkeeper Jack Kelly. Molloy led the team in scoring; totaling 29 goals and 10 assists for 39 points. Kelly appeared in all 14 games for the Bears, compiling a 7-6 record and a 10.56 goals against average. He saved 54.7 percent of shots faced in over 730 minutes of action.
BOBCATS SLATED FIFTH IN COACHES' POLL
The Quinnipiac men's lacrosse team was picked to finish fifth in the MAAC's Preseason Coaches' Poll, announced on January 28, 2015. Siena College, last year's MAAC Champions, claimed the top spot in the poll with 46 total points. Marist College, the MAAC championship runner-up, was second in the poll with 38 points, while Canisius College (33), University of Detroit Mercy (30) and Quinnipiac (27) rounded out the top five. Manhattan College (13) and Monmouth (9) finished sixth and seventh.
INSIDE LACROSSE RECOGNITION
Two seniors on the Quinnipiac men's lacrosse team – Michael Sagl and Carmen French – were recognized by Inside Lacrosse with preseason accolades in an article released by the website. In addition, the story included a preseason coaches' poll where the Bobcats found themselves in the fifth slot of the census.
ONE OF THE BEST EVER
Michael Sagl has peppered Quinnipiac's record books, ranking among the leaders in assists, points and goals. He already owns the program record for assists (68), while ranking fourth in points (127) and 15th in goals scored (59). Last season, Sagl eclipsed the 100-point plateau – serving as the 10th Quinnipiac player to accomplish the feat. Sagl is the only player to have 25 assists in two different seasons and one of seven players to post 50 points in a season (51, 2013).
SAGL'S STREAK
Michael Sagl extended his point streak to 34 straight games, serving as the nation's sixth longest streak. His stint began back on April 14, 2012, totaling 47 goals, 59 assists and 106 points during the span. He has multiple points in 31 of the 34 games.
FIVE POINT GAMES
Michael Sagl has eight career five-point games. Sagl posted two five-point games last season and had his second career game with four assists. Sagl had a career high of seven points when he tallied four goals and three assists in the NEC Semifinals in 2013.
STANDOUT SOPHOMORE
Ryan Keenan finished with 32 goals last season, which tied him for 10th all-time for most goals in a single season. He has 34 goals and eight assists through two years at Quinnipiac. He has three career hat tricks and two career five-point games, recording career highs in goals (6) and points (7) in the Bobcats' second to last game against Yale (4/22/14) last year.
HE'S KIND OF A BIG DIEHL
Matt Diehl enters Sunday's match with a five game scoring streak, coming off four goals and two assists in the 2014 season finale. Diehl ranks 13th on Quinnipiac's all-time assists list, and is moving closer to cracking top 20 in goals scored. Diehl has 42 goals and 36 assists at Quinnipiac.
MATTY ICE
Matt Kycia scored in five out of the last six games of the 2014 season. He upped his season-point total to 14 at the strength of nine goals and five assists. He has 13 career goals and five career assists at Quinnipiac.
CORKY CHIPS IN
Pat Corcoran scored two goals and assisted on three others in a five-point afternoon against Monmouth (4/5/14) last season. It marked the fifth time he's had four or more points in a game – and matched a career high for points in a game (RMU, 4/21/12). Corcoran scored his 11th goal of the season against Yale 4/22/14), upping his career totals to 38 goals and 26 assists at Quinnipiac.
THE OLD STATE LINE KID
Nate Nibbelink had five goals and three assists last season. Nibbelink had a career high of two points with a goal and an assist in the win over Manhattan (4/15/14).
FOLLOWING IN HIS BROTHER'S FOOTSTEPS
Kevin Diehl, the brother of Matt Diehl, found the back of the cage for the first time in his career at Yale (4/22/14). He followed that performance with a goal and an assist in the season finale against Air Force (4/26/14).
THE CLASS HELPER
Connor Meth ranked second on the team with 12 assists, adding eight goals for a season point-total of 20. Meth's first 20-point season was capped off with two goals against Fairfield (4/15/14) and a goal and two assists against Siena (4/19/14).
WELL DONE WELDON
Evan Weldon has three career goals at Quinnipiac, each coming in games last year. He netted the first of his season against Brown (2/22/14) and the second against Providence (3/2/14). He scored Quinnipiac's last goal of the game against Siena (4/19/14) just before the final buzzer sounded. He had his first assist of the season against Fairfield (4/15/14).
STAY HUNGRY
Quinnipiac ranked among the nation's leaders in ground balls last year. The Bobcats scooped up 30.7 per game which has them ranked 20th in the country.
LARGE INCOMING CLASS
Quinnipiac brings in 19 new faces to the program this year. Eight senior class members graduated last May: Leo Horine, Gill Conners, Tom Gilligan, Henry Graves, Brandon Kuring, Chris McMahon, and Dylan Webster.
A HISTORY LESSON
Quinnipiac collected its 20th career MAAC win against Manhattan (3/15/14). The Bobcats were 6-2 in the MAAC in 1999, 4-5 in 2000 and 9-0 in 2001. The Bobcats claimed the regular season title in 2001.
COPPOLECCHIA SIGNS WITH MLL
Former Quinnipiac captain Chris Coppolecchia was drafted by the New York Lizards, an affiliate of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) based out of Hampstead. Coppolecchia played four years for Quinnipiac from 2009-12, serving as a team-captain in his senior season. After graduation, he was selected in the second round of the inaugural Professional Lacrosse League (PLL) College Draft.
WEBBY INKS DEAL
Dylan Webster, who graduated from Quinnipiac this past May, has signed a professional contract to continue his lacrosse career. Webster inked a one-year deal with the Toronto Rock and has earned an opportunity to obtain a roster spot when training camp opens in December.
THE SCHEDULE
Quinnipiac's 2015 schedule features seven non-conference games and six more against member institutions of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). Of the 14 games, the Bobcats will sport away uniforms nine times during the regular season. Quinnipiac has four games scheduled to be played at the QU Lacrosse Turf on Mount Carmel Campus.
MOVE TO THE MAAC
The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Council of Presidents revealed with unanimous approval for Quinnipiac University to join the MAAC, effective as of July 1, 2013. After 15 years as a Northeast Conference affiliate, Quinnipiac is officially a member of the MAAC with competition slated for the 2013-14 academic year.
ON DECK
Quinnipiac takes on NJIT, a first year program in NCAA Division I lacrosse, on Saturday, Feb. 28 in New Jersey. Faceoff is set for 12 p.m. at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium in Newark.
