HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac men's basketball team signed point guard Mikey Dixon (New Castle, Del./Sanford) and shooting guard Peter Kiss (New York, N.Y./Notre Dame Prep) to the Class of 2020 in the early signing period, it was announced today by Head Coach Tom Moore.
As a junior, Dixon helped Sanford to a 20-5 final record and a No. 1 ranking in the state of Delaware, while averaging 22 points per game. He was a first-team All-Delaware selection and was chosen to the DICBA Top 10, after shooting 56 percent from the floor and an impressive 48 percent from three-point territory (58-121). He poured in 39 points in the regular season finale for Sanford against Delcastle, and helped the Warriors reach the semifinals of the state tournament by scoring 22 points in a quarterfinal win.
"I am thrilled to welcome Mikey Dixon to our program," said Moore. "Mikey is a dynamic point guard who will bring a lot of offensive ability to our backcourt for years to come. He is a scoring lead guard who can shoot with range and get into the lane. He is very good with the ball and has an explosiveness that I think will translate well to the MAAC. He comes from the Sanford School, which is an elite high school basketball program, and has learned under the tutelage of Coach Stan Waterman, who has prepared several young men for college basketball in his time there."
"Mikey has worked extremely hard to develop into one of the most prolific scorers in high school basketball," said Waterman. "It has been a pleasure to watch him mature and grow as a player and more importantly as a person. His passion and love for the game has been the driving force behind his success. Quinnipiac is a great fit for Mikey athletically as well as academically. Coach Tom Moore and his staff were excellent throughout the recruiting process and will help Mikey pursue his goals and dreams."
Kiss, a 6-5 combo guard from New York City, is currently playing for Notre Dame Prep in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. He previously attended Victory Rock Prep School in Sarasota, Florida, where he was a second-team all-league selection last year, after beginning his scholastic career at Monsignor Scanlan High School in The Bronx. He has only been playing competitively for three years, but has developed quickly enough to earn All-Star honors at the Academic Elite Camp in the Summer of 2014.
"Peter Kiss is an outstanding addition to our program," said Moore. "He is a very talented, tough-minded guard who has great size and length for a perimeter player. He is a gym rat who has improved greatly in a short amount of time. Peter can shoot, pass, and defend at a high level and his year under Ryan Hurd at national power Notre Dame Prep will continue his development."
"Peter is the definition of a split personality," said Hurd. "Off the court, he's one of the kindest, most decent human beings you'd ever want to meet. Once he steps between the lines, a different personality kicks in and he competes with every fiber of his being. He takes no plays off, and wants to be the best at everything he does. When you combine that with ridiculous athleticism, you have the chance to have a pretty special player on your hands. He has all the physical tools, and with a few more years of quality coaching, which he is obviously going to get at Quinnipiac, the sky is the limit for him."
Dixon and Kiss enable the Bobcats to fill the two available scholarships which will be vacated after this year by current senior James Ford, Jr. and fifth-year senior Will Simonton.
