HAMDEN, Connecticut – The Quinnipiac women's cross country team received national attention on Monday, October 19 as the team was ranked No. 15 in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division I Northeast Regional Women's Cross Country Poll. The appearance in the Northeast Poll is the first time the Bobcats have been ranked this season.
After being selected second in the MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, the Bobcats have done nothing to disappoint as they have excelled both collectively and individually in several meets throughout the season.
Quinnipiac's season began with a 4th place finish at the Stony Brook Invitational. Many freshmen experienced their first taste of collegiate running at Stony Brook while junior Cameron Chaplen (Thomaston, Connecticut) led the way with an 8th place finish out of 77 competitors. For Chaplen, the race was perhaps her most impressive meet of her career as she finished with her first career Top 10 as well as the first time in 13 career appearances in which she finished as the fastest Bobcat.
The Bobcats' incredible season of success picked up in the following meet as Quinnipiac showcased their superior depth once again, capturing the Rider Invitational victory. The victory marked the 11th straight season in which the Bobcats have claimed at least one meet win in a single-season. Three Bobcats earned Top 10 results while seven finished in the Top 25. A key meet for the Bobcats in 2015, the meet featured eight of the 11 MAAC teams as Rosedale Park serves as the host site of the upcoming MAAC Championships.
The 2015 season continued at the 42nd annual Paul Short Invitational, wherein the Bobcats set a new program record placing 10th overall out of 35 teams in the storied event. Just one year removed from placing 23rd overall out of 38 teams in the same event, Quinnipiac improved drastically with a 13-spot bump in 2015 including another program record four Bobcats – Niamh Ashe (24th), Emily Wolff (37th), Kaleigh Roberts (71st) and Tracy Campbell (88th) – placing in the Top 100 in a crowded field that included 313 runners.
Most recently, backed by incredible efforts up and down the roster, Quinnipiac took 2nd place overall out of 39 teams at the New England Championships last weekend. The Bobcats' runner-up finish marked their best finish at the New England Championships since Quinnipiac took the title back in 2007. Ashe showed her full potential in the meet as she battled through the field to take 7th overall out of 263 runners. Ashe picked up her second career All-New England honor as well as her seventh career Top 10 result. Campbell also shined with a career-best 17th place finish while Wolff (18th) and Roberts (23rd) were right behind.
USTFCCCA NCAA Division I Northeast Regional Rankings (Oct. 19, 2015)
The USTFCCCA NCAA Division I Regional Cross Country Rankings are broken into nine separate regions (Great Lakes, Mountain, South Central, Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, South, and West) with teams earning a No. 1 – 15 ranking based on a regional executive committee that oversees all teams within their predetermined region. The Bobcats are the lone MAAC representative throughout all nine regions and hold a spot behind six Ivy League competitors, three from the American East, two from the Atlantic Coast Conference and one each from the BIG EAST, American Athletic and Mid-American Conference.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Friday, Oct. 23 in New Britain as the Bobcats will compete in the CCSU Mini Meet starting at 4:00 PM.
