HAMDEN, Conn. – Every team encounters the unbearable lows and scintillating highs throughout a season. Both came within 15 minutes of each other for the Quinnipiac University women's soccer team on Wednesday afternoon.
After surrendering the equalizer with just 3.9 seconds remaining in regulation, Quinnipiac persevered through the late anguish and found the game-winning goal in double overtime to defeat Marist College, 2-1, from the QU Soccer Field in Hamden. Nicole Eriksen (Stamford, Conn.) was the game's hero, putting home her first career goal in the victory.
Quinnipiac (2-10-1, 1-4-1 MAAC) garnered a 1-0 lead in the first half, and carried the advantage all the way into the waning seconds of the second half. With eight seconds remaining, Marist earned a free-kick from just outside the 18-yard box on the right side of the field. Camille Bowen lofted the ball into the penalty area which then took a deflection to Sarah Cannon on the back post. In the right place at the right time, the freshman defender knocked in the game-tying goal with 3.9 seconds left to force overtime.
Despite the unfortunate setback, Quinnipiac regained its composure and put Marist on its heels in the overtime session. Quinnipiac manufactured three shots in the extra frame, and made the third one count in the 104th minute of play. Carly Glaser (New City, N.Y.) started the sequence by finding Jessica Fontaine (Enfield, Conn.) on the right side of the field. Fontaine took a couple of touches to maneuver around her defender and delivered a ball to the far post with Eriksen in route. The junior forward redirected the ball over the goal-line to give the Bobcats their first MAAC win of the season.
In dire need of the three points, Quinnipiac kept its playoff hopes alive with the win. Now with four points in the league standings, the Bobcats will likely need at least three wins in their last four games to have a chance for postseason play. Quinnipiac is currently chasing Siena and Canisius for the final two playoff spots.
A total team effort to secure the win, Quinnipiac received strong performances all over the pitch. Junior goalkeeper Natalia Grodzki (Bartlett, Ill.) and the Bobcats' defensive line were outstanding, with Grodzki making four saves in her second win of the season.
Offensively, Quinnipiac leaned on Amanda Barroca (Bellmore, N.Y.) and Sarah Pandolfi (North Haven, Conn.). They were responsible for Quinnipiac's first goal, when Pandolfi slipped a pass in behind Marist's backline to put Barroca in on goal. She netted her second goal of the season and Pandolfi picked up her second assist since joining the Bobcats at the beginning of the season.
Joining Eriksen with a milestone was the freshman from New City, N.Y. Glaser picked up her first career assist by helping the game-winner. Fontaine was also credited with an assist, the fourth of her career.
The Bobcats are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 18 when they travel to top-ranked Monmouth for a crucial MAAC contest. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Hesse Field on The Great Lawn in West Long Branch, N.J.
