Abby Johnson Hits a Leadoff Homerun in QU Softball's 4-2 Win Over Maine

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University softball team defeated Maine, 4-2 on Friday afternoon in their home opener at the QU Softball Field. The Bobcats have now won three of their last four and improved to 9-12 on the year while the Black Bears dropped to 8-11.
Senior Abby Johnson (Chelmsford, Massachusetts) went 1-for-2 in the game and smashed a leadoff solo homerun over the left field wall in the first inning. Johnson scored two runs and added a walk on the day.
Dani Edmands (Northborough, Massachusetts) finished the contest with a 1-for-2 performance from the plate including a double, hit by pitch and two RBIs.
Casey Herzog (Wappingers Falls, New York) picked up the win on the mound for Quinnipiac, improving to 5-6 on the season. The sophomore allowed two runs and four hits over five innings pitched.
The Bobcats leapt out to a quick start in the first inning. In the top of the frame, Herzog put the Black Bears down in order. Then in the bottom half of inning, Johnson gave Quinnipiac a 1-0 lead with her first homerun of the year and third of her career.
Both teams were held scoreless for the next three innings until the Bobcats took a 4-0 advantage in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, a Herzog single followed by back-to-back walks loaded the bases for Quinnipiac. Emily Czaja (Palmer, Massachusetts) stepped into the box and reached base on a fielder's choice while Herzog came around to score on an overthrow by the Maine third baseman. With the bases again full of Bobcats, Edmands hit a two-run double to left field, giving QU a 4-0 lead after five.
Maine cut Quinnipiac's advantage in half in the sixth inning, scoring two runs off two hits and two walks. With the bases loaded and no outs, Sydney Robey (Glenmoore, Pennsylvania) came in to replace Herzog. The senior walked in the Black Bears' first run, but struck out three of the next four batters to limit the damage to just two runs.
The Bobcats' were held scoreless in their last at bats, but Robey registered the save with a one-two-three inning in the top of the seventh.
Quinnipiac continues their series with Maine on Saturday, March 25, with a doubleheader at the QU Softball Field. The first game is slated to start at 12 p.m. with the second game to follow just 30 minutes after completion.
