Sydney Robey Goes 2-for-3, Keilani Finley Hits a Two-Run Homerun in the Game
CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Quinnipiac softball team fell to Rutgers, 9-3, in their final game of the USF Softball Tournament on Sunday morning. With the result, the Bobcats drop to 8-12 on the year and finished the weekend with a 2-3 record. The Scarlet Knights improved to 14-16 with the win.
Quinnipiac scored three runs off six hits against Rutgers, but could not overcome an early three-run deficit. Senior Sydney Robey (Glenmoore, Pennsylvania) had the only multi-hit game for the Bobcats, going 2-for-3 with an RBI double. Junior Keilani Finley (Alameda, California) smashed her team-leading third homerun of the season as she went 1-for-2 with a walk and two RBIs.
The Bobcats threatened to score in the top of the first inning, but left the bases loaded. With a runner on, Quinnipiac filled the bases after back-to-back singles by sophomore Miranda Magana (Santa Paula, California) and Robey. Rutgers forced the next batter into an infield pop fly to end the inning.
The Scarlet Knights took a 3-0 lead in the third with three runs off four hits. Two of the first three batters of the inning recorded bunt singles to put runners on first and second with one out. Rutgers then scored three consecutive runs off a single, double and fielder's choice. Quinnipiac limited any further damage as they threw a runner out at the plate and registered a ground ball out to get out of the inning.
The Bobcats cut down the deficit in the top of the fourth with their first two runs of the game. After Magana reached on an error, Finley hit a dinger over the left field fence to bring the score to 3-2. The junior now has 13 RBIs through 20 games to lead the team.
Rutgers answered in the bottom of the inning with four more runs off four hits and an error to extend their advantage to 7-3.
Quinnipiac then cut the deficit to three with one final run in the fifth inning. After the first two batters were put down in order, senior Dani Edmands (Northborough,
Massachusetts) smacked a double to center field. Robey then stepped up to bat and recorded an RBI double to make the score 7-4.
The Scarlet Knights tacked on two additional runs in the bottom of the frame to bring the final score to 9-4.
After finishing up their spring break trip, the Bobcats will travel back to Hamden for a five game home-stand. Quinnipiac will play Maine in their home opener at the QU Softball Field on Friday, March 5 at 3 p.m.
