HAMDEN, Conn. - Quinnipiac University Men's Basketball Head Coach Tom Moore today announced that Evann Baker (Washington, D.C.) will join the Bobcats for the 2007-08 season. Baker's signing comes shortly after his brother, Jeremy Baker, agreed to transfer to Quinnipiac from Garden City Community College.
Baker, a 6-foot-3 guard, comes to Quinnipiac from Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield, Maine, where he averaged 22 points and six assists per game for MCI last season. Baker was also named to the National Prep School Invitational All-Tournament Team. Baker originally signed a letter of intent to attend Wichita State University but was granted a release after a coaching change.
"We are obviously very excited to have Evann become part of our Quinnipiac basketball program," said Moore. "He is an extremely athletic and tough-minded guard who can play both backcourt positions. We feel his competitiveness and overall ability, combined with his extensive national prep school experience, will be a fine addition."
Prior to MCI, Baker played for Archbishop Carroll in Washington, D.C. In his final season, Baker was named the 2006 Gatorade Player of the Year for the D.C. area and was a Washington Post All-Metro Honorable Mention after averaging 19.5 points and five assists. Baker was also named to the 2006 Capital Classic District All-Stars.
At the Montverde (Fla.) Academy Invitational Tournament, Baker broke eight tournament records on his way to be named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Baker scored 17 points against tournament champion Wheeler and 31 points against Heritage Christian before pouring in a career-best 51 points against Brevard Christian. In that game, Baker coverted on 21-of-21 attempts from the free throw line. He broke the tournament records for overall points (99), points scored in a game (51), free throws attempted (38), free throws made (34), free throws attempted in one game (21), free throws made in a game (21), points in one quarter (24 in the fourth quarter) and points in one half (30 in the second half).
Baker previously played for Walter Ray's highly successful Maryland based AAU program, EGOS (Education, Goals, Opportunities and Sports) United, which also produced former Quinnipiac standout Rob Monroe, as well as recent additions to the Bobcats' program, Jeremy Baker and Louis Brookins.
