A former head softball coach at Quinnipiac , Maribeth Clifford led her team to a 17–21 mark in her first season in 2000. From 1990–99, Clifford served as an assistant softball coach and helped the program achieve three 30-win seasons (1994, 1995 and 1996) and a Northeast-10 title in 1996. A four-year starter in softball as an undergraduate, Clifford earned All-New England and All-Northeast-10 honors in 1988 after hitting .279 and boasting a .990 field percentage. She also was named Quinnipiac’s outstanding female athlete.
